FDA Statement on Canadian Rule to Control BSE Risks
(Source: FDA) - The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has issued a feed rule to extend protection in Canada against the risks of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), better known as Mad Cow disease. Feed rules are designed to forestall the spread of the disease and its related human form, Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease.


A Treatment for Dementia of Parkinson's Disease
(Source: FDA) - The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) today approved Exelon for the treatment of mild to moderate dementia associated with Parkinson's disease. Exelon was previously approved for the treatment of mild to moderate dementia of the Alzheimer's type.


Purified Water May Cut Risk of Alzheimer's
(Source: The Arizona Republic) - According to findings from the Sun Health Research Institute, drinking purified water, rather than tap water, may cut your risk of getting Alzheimer's disease.


A Probable Cause for Alzheimer's?
(Source: DOE/Pacific Northwest National Laboratory) - A study by the Department of Energy and UCLA suggests that many neurodegenerative diseases leave a biochemical calling card, or bio-marker, that could be used to predict the earliest stages of brain impairment. Researchers believe that this is the key to reversing many as-yet-incurable diseases.


Violence by Dementia Patients in Nursing Homes
(Source: Senior Journal) - According to a report filed in the Archives of Internal Medicine, constipation, in people with dementia, can be related to physical acts of violence, such as shoving, scratching, and hitting.


Using PET Scans To Discover Signs Of Alzheimer's
(Source: Wall Street Journal) - In its initial stages, Alzheimer's can be difficult to tell from normal aging, depression or other types of dementia. However advocates of Positron Emission Tomography (PET) say the scans significantly help for the early and accurate diagnosis of the disease.
